UPI: Standing on the shoulders of IFT, AFT, IFL-CIO, AFL-CIO

The University Professionals of Illinois (UPI) is the largest organization representing higher education's faculty and staff in the State of Illinois. UPI is affiliated with the Illinois Federation of Teachers, the American Federation of Teachers and the state and national AFL-CIO.

Organized as a local in 1976, UPI finalized the first contract for the five Board of Governors universities in 1977. Currently, UPI has chapters on seven campuses — Chicago State, Eastern Illinois, Governors State, Northeastern Illinois, Northern Illinois, the University of Illinois at Springfield, and Western Illinois universities. We have negotiated numerous contracts, many with yearly salary reopeners, to take advantage of improvements in the State of Illinois' financial situation.

Besides our work at the bargaining table, we join with the IFT and members of IFT's University Council to lobby legislators for the improvement of the financial condition of Illinois' higher education system.

We cooperate with the AFT in providing our members the numerous benefits they enjoy and that protect them in their workplace. We are able to tap into the extensive educational resources that the AFT and the IFT are equipped to provide, resulting in professional issues / educational advancement programs, such as Chicago State's Educational Research and Development Program, the first such program to be provided on a higher education campus.

We are in daily contact with our brothers and sisters in the IFL-CIO as together we work to improve the conditions of working men and women in Illinois.
